Although perhaps best known for its wines, the Chianti region is also rich in picturesque hilltop villages, ancient
churches, abbeys, castles, farmhouses and villas. Bordered on the east by the Chianti mountains and to the west
by the Elsa river, the landscape of Chianti is characterised by gently rolling hills, covered in vines and olive
trees, and of course the ever-present cypress trees, alternating with verdant valleys, this area really does have
something for everybody.
The Residence is ideally positioned to explore the main towns of the Chianti region, such as Greve-in-Chianti,
with an attractive arcaded piazza and the church of St. Croce, Radda-in-Chianti, perched on a hilltop with steep,
winding streets, encircled by the old medieval road within the walls of the town; Castellina-in-Chianti also enjoys
an elevated position with panoramic views and its 15th century medieval walls and fortifications bear witness to
the fierce battles between Florence and Sienna which took place in the town in bygone times. Impruneta-in-Chianti,
a market town about half an hour south of Florence, where you can visit the Church of Santa Maria and the ancient
terra-cotta pottery kilns; Strada-in-Chianti, where the main attractions are the Church of San Cristoforo and the
ancient Castle of Vicchiomaggio and Gaiole, a very important wine centre, with many classic Chianti wine producers
in the surrounding area.
Florence - Known as the cradle of the Renaissance and one of the greatest cities in the world, Florence provides
a feast of history, art and architecture, and you will be spoilt for choice, with the Uffizi Gallery, the Pitti
Palace and the Ponte Vecchio, to name but a few. The Residence is just 12km from the heart of the city.
Sienna - this historic city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for, amongst other things,
Il Palio, the spectacular traditional medieval horse race run around the Piazza del Campo twice each year. The
city has many wonderful buildings, including the Medicean fortress and also numerous churches, notably the Duomo,
one of the greatest examples of Italian Romanesque architecture, art galleries housing masterpieces of the Siena
School.
Please note that the pool will be open from 1 May - 30 September.
