Home produce is also for sale (wine, oil, fruit etc). Castiglione della Pescaia is an ancient seaside town in the province of Grosseto. The name originates from the medieval fortress (castello) and large fishery (pesciaia). Today Castiglione della Pescaia is known for its beaches. The town is in two sections, one at the coast and the other climbing uphill and providing beautiful views of Elba and Giglio and the promontory of Argentario. Nearby Grosseto is the capital of the region, and dates back to the 9th century since which time it has grown steadily in importance until it became one of the principal Tuscan cities. Amongst others, the main attractions are the Medicean Walls, once moated fortifications from the 16th century, the Romanesque Cathedral with campanile and black and white marble facade, containing artworks such as the carved baptismal font and Madonna delle Grazie and the Palazzo Aldobrandeschi, first built in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the 19th century, now the seat of the Province of Grosseto. The historic city of Siena has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for, amongst other things, Il Palio, the spectacular traditional medieval horse race run around the Piazza del Campo twice each year. The city has many wonderful buildings, including the Medicean fortress and also numerous churches, notably the Duomo, one of the greatest examples of Italian Romanesque architecture, art galleries housing masterpieces of the Siena School.
